The oven isn’t going to put a smile just on the faces of your loved ones, it’s also a great helper to throw unforgettable backyard parties. If it’s correctly built, it will also add value to your home. Thus, there are more benefits to having such an oven than disadvantages.
Before we get into the thick of things, we must say that you can bake more than just pizza with it. You can slow cook large pieces of meats like lamb shoulder or ribs. The same goes for the best home pizza oven as the appliance can be used to cook not only pizza, but also frittatas, pancakes, pitta bread, and more. Therefore, versatility is enjoyed regardless if you make your own oven in the backyard or buy an electric appliance to use in the kitchen.

What You Will Need

- Bricks – To ensure that you have enough even if you do something wrong, you should purchase around 30 bricks. The majority of them will be smooth with no holes to form the basis of the oven floor
- Cement – Consider purchasing a tub of 5 kg. Cement and around 20 wooden beams that measure approximately 47” x 7.8” x 7.8” accompanied by an electric drill
- Stones – They should be big and small (aggregate)
- Builders sand – Around 14 bags with 20kg each
- Clay – It doesn’t have to be expensive as you will need around 175 kg
Now that you know what tools you need, let’s get into it!
Decide the location of the oven and lay a pallet. The essential thing is that it needs to be horizontal and as flat as possible. If it isn’t flat, use some pieces of wood to make them act as wedges and place them beneath the pallet. Thus, creating a uniform bottom.
Then, when you’re happy with the position of the pallet, use a tool to cut some board, ensure that it’s the exact size with the base of the pallet. The chipboard should be around 1.9” high to form a durable perimeter on top of the pallet. The ideal situation would be that there are no visible gaps between the board and the pallet as you want to prevent the cement from falling through the cracks.
Finally, you will have to mix the concrete.
Once the cement has dried, the best idea would be to lay the bricks according to your preferences before you fix them. The reason for this is because you can get a clear idea of how you want the oven before setting it in place.
This action is essential because you can quickly figure out how many bricks you will need to make the oven that you wish. Thankfully, this will not take long. In case you have purchased large bricks that are used in house-building, we advise that you consider breaking them in half to make them more accessible to work with.
Now that you know the layout of the oven, it’s time to create the arch. This shape is going to be the roof of the oven. As a rule of thumb, you should construct it to make it around 2/3 of the overall oven height. Whatever you choose to make the support is according to your preferences.
The material will be thick and durable enough to give the right amount of support. It’s better to have an arched roof than a flat one because the bricks will also contribute to the help of the overall construction.
Use a mixture of cement and fine sand to form the first layer of the bricks. For the best and fastest results, we recommend that you also cement the roof. To ensure safety, you must place a cellophane sheet across the base. Then, you should fill it with sand. The reason for this is because the sand will prevent the bricks from collapsing when you’re cementing them in place.
The sand needs to be wrapped in cellophane to ensure that it doesn’t stick to the inside of the oven. Additionally, it prevents it from sticking to the wet cement when layering the bricks.
Then, you should begin to layer the bricks to form a secure layer and to prevent the heat from escaping. We advise that you also fix the chimney in place. Another tip is to install it a touch higher than the door to ensure that the smoke will travel through the arch and not through the front.
If there’s nothing left, create another mixture of concrete or clay. You have the freedom to lay it everywhere on the oven. The reason for this is to make the oven aesthetically-pleasing and to provide better insulation.
Allow it to rest for several days to allow the cement to dry appropriately. When you believe that it has thoroughly dried out, remove the support. Once this is removed, you will have access to the bag of sand that is inside of the oven. Remove the sides of the bag to dig out the sand. When enough sand has been removed, pull out the bag with what is left behind.
Create a small fire to make sure that you’re not damaging the insides. This action will also ensure that the cement is encouraged to dry out better. Once the fire has been created, it’s time to get cooking. We recommend that you use a small number of ingredients to make the first pizza as this is more like a test to see if the oven is behaving as it should.
